Poor vision is one of the most common health disorders in the
country and even the world. Just about one in every three human beings has
problems with eyesight. And it's no wonder considering that the eye is
undoubtedly the most complex organ of the human body. The intricate parts of the
eye allow conscious light perception and vision, which makes it possible for the
eye to perceive depth and to differentiate color.
One of the more common early symptoms of multiple sclerosis
is problems with your eyes however while they may affect your eyesight very
rarely do they ever cause blindness. Episodes of double vision can occur when
the muscles that control one of your eyes is slightly weaker than the other and
both eyes do not stay coordinated, this usually goes away on its own in a short
period of time.
Sty...these can be painful, usually in the
form of a red lump on the edge of the eyelid. They can be down to an infection
or an eyelash follicle. Gently apply warm compresses every three to four hours,
and wipe eyelids with sterilised water. Most sties will heal on their own
however antibiotic drops may be required, or maybe a small operation to drain
the pus.
Red or Blood Shot Eyes...Tiny haemorrages
are caused by broken blood vessels. It can be quite harmless and common, however
if the problem keeps coming back, check with your doctor to rule out factors
including high blood pressure.
Dry Eyes...This is where you have an
inadequate supply of tears, or the tears don't form a good film over the
eyeball. Your optician can rule out serious eye causes, then discuss using
artificial tear drops.
Myopia… Myopia is also referred to as nearsightedness.
This means that a person with myopia has a hard time seeing things in the
distance. It is one of the most common conditions requiring glasses or contacts.
In its early stages, myopia usually appears around the age of ten. Initially, it
may not require correction unless the condition worsens. The level of myopia is
considered to be largely hereditary.
Hyperopia… Hyperopia is the opposite of myopia. It is
a defect in vision that causes far-sightedness or a difficulty focusing on
objects that are near. This is often caused by an imperfection in the eyeball or
lens, which results in blurred vision for the person with the condition. In
severe cases glasses are needed to correct vision.
Laser Treatment used to be the mainstay for treating macular
edema, that is, swelling of the retina caused by leaky retinal blood vessels.
The macular edema is the most common way diabetic patients can lose vision and
it happens to almost every patient. If the swelling develops right in the center
of the retina, called the macula, the vision may become blurred. The more severe
the swelling, the more blurred the vision.
