Getting Medical Care In Germany

So My father was telling me a story about their care coverage in Germany last week. He ruptured a disc in his back and was in terrible pain. He was able to use the German medical system and required surgery a week stay in the hospital and one month of physical therapy. A week of care in a hospital in the United States probably costs around $25,000 to 75,000 depending upon your care requirements, medications, etc. Add in the physical therapy and I'm sure you would be exceeding $100,000 in medical costs. So here's the real question: How much did this cost - in Germany - ??? Total Bill: $14,000. I know that socialized medicine doesn't get discussed over the dinner table in the U.S. - but there are so many organizations making money and increasing the cost of care it's ridiculous. I'm not sure a single payer system is the entire way to go - but at this point I'm ready for anything.

Good points...but remember, the disc replacement prosthesis was developed through research and development funded through American greenbacks.  And that was a direct function of profit motive.  Socialized medicine countries are able to reap the benefits of the innovation that matures from open market economies, without having to subsidize the profit margin.  So there are trade offs, many only realized when technology and innovation slow down as fewer countries exist to offset the development risk incurred by the prime movers in the medical economy.

Thanks for the comment.  I guess the point is why does the care cost so much less there than here?  So our companies are making profits and innovation but in the end the american consumer is basically paying for it via health insurance costs and medical bills.  It's a strange tradeoff.
