Do you want to talk to other Cancer Patients?
There are over eleven million cancer patients in the United States according to the latest published report by the US National Cancer Institute Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER). This number represents people diagnosed in the past and newly diagnosed cancer patients.
The American Cancer Society reports that men have about a 45% chance of developing some form of cancer during their lifetime. Women have an estimated 38% chance of developing some form of cancer during their lifetime. There are many factors that contribute to one’s risk of cancer including: alcohol consumption, tobacco use, diet, body weight, genetics, physical activity and more.
Reducing Your Risk
To reduce your risk of certain types of cancer, it is recommended that men consume no more than two alcoholic drinks per day and women consume no more than one alcoholic drink per day. Quitting smoking and stopping any form of tobacco will also reduce your risk of cancers and diseases. A healthy diet rich in anti-oxidants and vitamins has been shown to lower the risk of cancer. Maintaining a healthy body weight will also lower one’s risk of cancer as well as many other chronic diseases. Obesity can lead to diabetes, heart disease and even a higher risk of breast cancer. Physical activity can help prevent weight gain and as well as reduce the risk of colon and breast cancer. Genetics do affect one’s risk of developing cancer; however, living a healthy lifestyle may help lower your risks of becoming a cancer patient.
Cancer Support Groups
There are many support groups available for cancer patients and their family members. By joining a cancer patient support group you may connect with other people who share your diagnosis and get support. Ask other cancer patients and survivors questions about their experiences, treatment and symptoms.
