Do you have Fibromyalgia Syndrome?
Fibromyalgia syndrome is a chronic medical condition which causes body and muscle aches and fatigue. Some reports estimate that six million people in the United States suffer from fibromyalgia syndrome. Fibromyalgia can cause pain throughout the body; in tendons, muscles and joints. Many suffers report feeling intense muscle soreness and body aches for long periods of time (sometimes months) without relief. Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include chronic fatigue, memory difficulties, sleep disorders, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome and depression. Additionally, many fibromyalgia suffers have a reduced tolerance for physical activity and exercise.
Fibromyalgia can develop on its own or it may be linked to other medical conditions such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown. Although this is not currently a cure for fibromyalgia syndrome there are treatments that can help suppress the symptoms of the disease. Some medications have been shown to be helpful in reducing pain. Some medical professionals recommend using a combination of different treatments to address the condition including medications, physical therapy, counseling and support groups.
Studies suggest that certain steps can be taken to help reduce the symptoms of fibromyalgia syndrome. Although physical activity and exercise may be difficult, it is recommended that patients slowly start a low impact fitness routine. Starting slow and increasing the length of the activity over time may help reduce some of the pain. Additionally, eating a healthy diet rich in vitamins, fish oils and magnesium may help reduce some symptoms of the condition.
FacetoFace Health offers many support groups for people with chronic medical conditions. These support groups are anonymous and secure. It may be helpful to connect to others who share your medical condition. Ask them questions about their experiences and treatments and get support.
