Hello - we have a family friend who's chile was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum - they went to indepth physical therapy, and classes - and I can say this - he is a normal kid in a normal class room now.  I will find out where they went - it's in Boulder, Colorado.  His mom is our cub scout leader so i will ask her.

Toilet Training comes as it comes... our son wet his bed until he was almost 6.

    Hang in there!

my son figured out the toilet at seven and a half years old.(diagnosed as full blown autism) As long as the child pees in the toilet they will hold it til they get home if they can. If you push the toileting issue they can hold it so much they strectch out the muscles so they can't feel it when they go. my other child i believe to be mildly autistic. finished toilet training at four and a half years old. They peed in the potty and used pull ups.

Re: looking for advice and help

Get a school IEP an IQ test, i tried to find a neurologist because it is a neurological issue. Physical therapy, Occupational therapy, Check out gluten free diets i heard they work great. My son takes medicine for his ADHD (a symptom of his autism) Any help from a Regional center in your area get it ask for iq test and all the things they can give you. Beware they will call DCFS aka Child protective services they are not your friends nor are the school staff, At the iep should be alot of people including the school psychologist, speech therapist who tests for sound sencitivity also. Physical therapist/occupational therapist for the school.  etc. Dont let them threaten you into signing the iep right away. you have the right to look it over and make sure that is what you want your child to learn. The IQ test will tell you how much the child can learn. Be ware that your child at 18 with out a conservator ship could be recruted to the military eventhough the child will be listed as disabled in school.  Autism speaks family services told me they feed and clothe homeless (Autistic familys i guess). I have not found anyone who sponsors children with autism to get the help they need. Wish this were more positive but it is what i experienced having my child diagnosed at 5 and 3/4 years. Dont agree to let them stop any services on the IEP with out a second opinion. I never knew that the speech therapist did the sencitivity  to sound and the testing for example my child wont put two feet together and jump not from the ground or edge of the mini van that the speech person tests for. Hope this helps and you find better help Remember these people arent your friends. Your Chid is perfecly Autistic it is a blessing really.

Re: looking for advice and help

Autism spectrum usually means higher-functioning (like myself) and I highly suggest checking out these two books:

The Complete Guide to Asperger Syndrome by Tony Attwood

The Oasis Guide to Asperger Syndrome by ...

Both are fantastic. Also, Lianne Holliday Willey, both a parent and person living with ASD, edited a book for adolescents. While (even though this post is old) your child is quite young, there is more great info, plus lists of practical ways of dealing with sensory and sensory-motor issues. I'm a bit older (nineteen) and it's my favorite.
